“Satin matte 1″
F644/? Crystalline base.
Oxidation fired: ^11 > Multiple electric & gas firings.

This satin-matte effect on the last two bottles is created by a combination of chemically altering the base glaze, putting it through a standard crystalline firing, and then re-firing it to just below it’s melting point. It’s tricky, as firing it even a bit hotter than necessary will cause the glaze to soften too much, resulting in a blistered surface. Glazes fired in this way without the chemical modifications can produce a similar effect, but the loss rate is higher still due to an even smaller heatwork window. A piece must often be put through several firings before it yields the right surface –but once it blisters, it’s ruined.
Needless to say, at this point I’m doing very few of these.
Note: This bottle is slightly heavier than others I make. Thinner walled forms tend to not survive the types of multiple firings this surface requires.

“Reduction2″
F644 crystalline glaze base2
Oxidation fired: ^11 >Reduction fired from ^017.
$500-*Sold*
*Another casualty of my limited photography skills, this glaze is more glossy & lustrous than the image allows for. The background is very much like an aventurine glaze, and the central crystal really stands out against it. The top has purple hues interspersed, while the bottom (illuminated by light) fades to a soft gold color… a wonderful surface!
